Electronic Paper is Eco Friendly Computing

Instead of stupidly trying to push the developing worlds old discarded power consuming discarded junk PC's to the less-developed countries. These countries should jump straight past the western worlds digital age mistakes and go for real usable and Eco-friendly tech, like Electronic Paper.

Like the iLaid from iRex, a company from the Netherlands just in my own home town of Amsterdam.

It is too expansive for me to buy now but price of this little wonder will drop soon when mass production of the ePaper displays takes off.

Of course the device has 802.11G WiFi build in, but the most striking fact is that the display works the opposite way like a LCD, it gets better readability in brighter ambient light (like sunshine...)

Oxblood Ruffin writes about the dangers of Google being the leading search engine provider and only 1 small ethical principal "Do no Evil". He writes:

Wikipedia informed me today that in my home country, Holland, the new government was sworn in by Queen Beatrix. Interesting enough, the key ministers are all from protestant background.

I would like to remind them that Protestants are protesters, rebels. I hope they will rebel for these issues:
- Reduce the growing air pollution in north-west Europe (1 reason i can't live there anymore...)
- Against the incumbent telco mafia industry.
- Regime change in the US.

And I hope for my country's people they will fortify the dams, because a massive amount of water coming to all the Lowlands on the globe soon....

Savarti is one of our traveling crew here in India. She has taught us much about what rural Indian villages are like. She works for M S Swaminathan Research Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to empowering rural communities through technology. In this interview she talks about what kind of practical technology villagers are using to get information about healthcare etc. Savarti, as well as Sheel from the last post, are part of a growing number of youth working with rural villagers in India to help expose them to technology for use in education and healthcare.

Sheel just e-mailed me this info about a similar organization that he volunteers with, Indicorps. Any young Indians around the world interested in working in rural India should check out their fellowship program which is starting again in January. Anyone interested in working in rural communities through M S Swaminathan Research Foundation should check out their job postings.

The television footage you see here has been circulating the internet for the last couple weeks. It originates from Pro TV a Romanian TV network. It really emphasizes the power of video as hard proof of what happens in the world. The Chinese government denies that the Tibetans were killed in cold blood. They claim they shot in self defense and that the Tibetans were threatening them. We can clearly see in the video that this is not the case. For a more in depth story see the Boing Boing post. I made this video for myself as well as all you, to try to communicate the reality of what these people have gone through and continue to go through to live free lives. Every child at this Tibetan Children's Village in Dharmasala have made that dangerous trek from Chinese occupied Tibet. Some never make it.

We met Sheel in India, and had a 36 hour train ride to learn about the work he’s doing with Kiva.org. Basically, the website allows you to make small loans directly to entrepreneurs in developing countries. Kiva finds these projects that need funding through non-profits in the local area to help guarantee that the money will be used appropriately.

I would love it if Kiva were to post videos of projects that have been funded. The big potential is to get conversation to happen between the funders and the entrepreneurs. Maybe they could share valuable information and contacts as well as the necessary money.
